What is Training Volume?

In strength training and bodybuilding, "Volume" refers to the total amount of work you perform during a specific exercise, a single workout, or over an entire week.

The formula for calculating volume is simple: Volume = Sets × Reps × Weight Lifted

For example, if you perform 4 sets of 10 repetitions on the Bench Press using 60 kg, your total training volume for that exercise is 2,400 kg (4 × 10 × 60).

Why Track Your Training Volume?

  1. Progressive Overload: To force your muscles to grow (hypertrophy), you must subject them to a stimulus greater than what they are used to. If your weekly volume for chest exercises was 5,000 kg last week, aiming for 5,100 kg this week guarantees you are progressing.
  2. Preventing Overtraining: Rapidly doubling your training volume can lead to severe muscle fatigue, central nervous system burnout, and injury. Tracking your workload ensures your increases are gradual and safe.
  3. Breaking Plateaus: If you stop seeing muscle growth, checking your weekly volume often reveals the issue. You may need to add an extra set or a second training day to stimulate further adaptation.

Understanding "Junk Volume"

While increasing your volume is necessary for muscle growth, there is a limit. Junk volume refers to sets and exercises that increase your total workload (and fatigue) but do not stimulate any extra muscle growth.

Scientific studies suggest that performing anywhere between 10 to 20 hard sets per muscle group, per week is the optimal "sweet spot" for hypertrophy. Going beyond 20 sets often leads to junk volume, where the extra fatigue actively harms your recovery.

Q: Should I calculate the volume for my entire workout or just one exercise? A: You can do both! However, most athletes find it more useful to track volume per muscle group (e.g., adding up the volume of your Bench Press, Incline Press, and Flyes to find your total "Chest Volume").

Q: Does Bodyweight count toward Training Volume? A: Yes! For exercises like Pull-ups or Dips, you should enter your body weight (plus any added weights attached to a belt) in the "Weight per Rep" field to get an accurate total volume.

Q: If I lift a lighter weight for more reps, is the volume the same? A: Mathematically, yes. Lifting 100 kg for 1 rep has the same volume (100 kg) as lifting 10 kg for 10 reps. However, the physiological effect is different. Heavy weights build maximum strength, while moderate/light weights build hypertrophy and endurance.
